There has been a massive common hashtag use to recognize latvians – #fromlatvia. Seems, it is quiet now, so patriotism is quite silent…everybody is talking about meteorite. Some photos has appeared, video has been added to youtube, people are talking about commercial campaign, about politicians etc.

There’s a saying – fall as cold water on head, it could be edited as fall as a meteorite in Latvia. I am aware that most people don’t know about meteorite, most don’t care, but it’s a fact that latvians are crazy to get this topic in trending words list on Twitter. As i am to update my blog, there is going to be small Twitter activity to post hashtag “meteorīts” right at noon. Wish us luck.

Most precise commentary, in my opinion, is said by Edijs Majors – “Ir nokritis nevis #meteorīts, bet asiņains gaļas gabals, kuru plosa kaulaini šakāļi (mediji), rijot gardo miesu (reitingus).” (It is no meteorite that has fallen, it is bloody piece of meat, which is gnawed by bone jackals (media), eating tasty flesh (ratings).

Nearly day has passed and now it is clear, that meteorite was campaign of mobile operator Tele 2. Well, only news i want to hear is expenses. Expenses of including police, army and other institutions. Gotta be biggie $ ! Hope that my operator LMT/okarte will do something too, up to know it seems that Bite were great with dance flashmob, Tele2 did fabulous things with meteorite..

More – only small amount of people will find this post useful. Still, i could call myself a person with quite various musical taste, so i’ve been following the latvian hip hop scene for some time. Fun fact – haven’t turned on EuropeanHitRadio for long time now. Prefer crazy & creative rhyming instead of “standing under radiostations’ umbrella”. Some new media ideas could surprise you..

New challengers with experience, who call themselves “PKI” are quite popular. Two members even have registered domain “podkasts.lv” long time ago, before all the great podcasters of nowadays. Every week i see more and more hip hop artists in Twitter. Do rappers twitter? Yes, they tweet, while not rhyming!

More attractive new media from rhyme makers? I was suprised, when i saw Street Tv up in Vimeo. Regular informative show about latest events, new singles and visitors in studio. Seems nice idea for small Latvia.

Buying mixtapes online – at last. I could say – green thinking. Less and less people care about cd in shelf as long as they can dowload music from internet legally. Hopefully in hip hop, album costs less in web than in music shop. Too bad, i can’t say same about other genres..

Some portals to follow, in case interest has appeared:

• hhradio – radio of actual/oldschool latvian songs, forum, new events info and quite big attendance
• hiphopz- info about events, portal of all sorts, haven’t really used it a lot, dunno why
• ground - same old…same old. Great interviews from time to time, can’t deny
• abductor.rakstnieciba – new events, never miss the big things, blog in a good way
• viensvienspieci – same as above, in addition – you can buy some hoodies as well
• podkasts - podcats about latest news in lv hip hop

Probably there are more of portals and blogs alike, but these are the ones, that i’ve been checking for some time. Why all the buzz about hip hop? Well, this thursday most of the greatest latvian rhymers are going to come together for a great envent – hip hop in LV. More information in video below!

What should be done with product, which is not represented very much in Internet. Surely, you know the right answer for this one. Nevertheless, if you are unsure about it, take a peek at the bottom of this article.*

I could say there are mainly good reasons, why tweetups are held. In fact, i am satisfied with idea for all of them, except one. The one held in honour of Izzi – the internet provider, which failed in Latvia Twitter sphere. No worries, they’re caching on their mistakes.

I guess, i am not so popular to call myself guru of internet trends and social media expert. However, idea that every active internet user, who “sign up for ten or more social media networks a day” can be called an expert flatters me. So i am about to tell my view of tweetups in Latvia.

• they are cheap - Sure, there is an option to hold big tweetup, but even then your nerves will be damaged only by organising it. Sponsors like tweetups – you need to approach bloggers carefully, then can make heel out of you/your organisation.
• IRL factor – Latvia is small. Most of Twitter users know each other by faces. If you have proper profile picture, it is. Encountering in Tweetup usually goes like this – i know you, your nickname is…errm…,well, i don’t remember, but you are really similar to your profile picture. Even more, mostly everybody knows each other.
• Presentations – Main aim for trendsetters is catching the right “the next big thing”. They can talk about it for hours, i guess. Would be evil not to predict the next meeting place for “syndicate”, right? I am not being very honest – some presentations are very good, but it depends on character.
• Inside jokes – When you meet someone with t-shirt “Bļaģeris”, it is obviously funny for some people. Same goes to people who in theory have signed up in Twitter before it even existed, just to tell everyone – I was first! Some respect, please!
• Not enough – i am aware that people have recognised beauty of tweetups, so there will be more!
• Limited invites – not a problem for me, but some of my friends have missed the registration. Sad.
• More presentations from newbies – i will be honest, it is boring to see someone from “syndicate” come and tell about statistics and so on. Give other trendsetters to tell about their observations. Small fish are in the internet pool also and they grow bigger!

That concludes my thoughts about tweetups, but they can change, as there are more to come. I would like to say, tweetup is internet-made real life event, which is very effective communication channel.
